Edison Chen (陳冠希) has a fashion business, CLOT but an Australian tattoo artist, Stu Pagdin and Taiwanese tattoo artist, Horiinu (彫犬) openly pointed a t-shirt design released by CLOT was their original work on Instagram lately. They felt furious as CLOT failed to obtain their permission before using their design and it resulted in copyright infringement. On Instagram Story, Stu Pagdin called Edison a thief and Horiinu showed his dissatisfaction: “As the original creators, we should deserve respect and others should not use it for their personal gains. I welcome everybody to share it with others.”
On 28th February 2019, CLOT posted a public apology to Stu Pagdin and Horiinu in English and traditional Chinese characters on its Facebook account and explained it encouraged their fans’ creativity through Random Internet Fan Tee this year. It decided to use the design submitted by one of their fans on Instagram and they did not verify the source before selling it. Thus, it was uncertain if that fan had indeed plagiarised another person work.
In addition, CLOT emphasised they felt furious and shocked upon knowing about it and immediately ordered the staff to remove the tops from the physical and online stores. It tried its best to communicate with 2 renowned artists and had terminated the working cooperation with that fan. CLOT planned to pursue the legal rights towards the opposite party and would be extra careful to verify the source in the future.
However, Horiinu remarked CLOT lacked of sincerity and there was a drastic difference when lodging a complaint to the headquarter earlier. Lastly, he will be continuing his protest.
