Because of the 2019 Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests, many demonstrations in Hong Kong are ongoing and several artistes expressed their thoughts online. Daniel Wu (吳彥祖) joins the industry in Hong Kong, films many local movies and switches to developing his career in Hollywood in recent years. However, some Chinese netizens pointed he supported secession in Hong Kong and Daniel made a clarification on Weibo on 21st August 2019.

Daniel posted messages in English, simplified and traditional Chinese respectively: “I have just come back from a long vacation to find that rumour mongers are accusing me of supporting Hong Kong secession and now some media are reporting this fake news. First of all, there could be nothing further from the truth. Although I am not a Hong Kong citizen, but I have deep feelings for Hong Kong and let’s make things clear here: I do not support Hong Kong secession at all! That is a ridiculous and illogical idea that will not work and I do not stand by that in anyway whatsoever. Secondly if this continues to be reported, not only is it fake news but it is also slander which is punishable by law, and I will not hesitate to pursue full legal actions against any parties that continues to spread fake news like this.”
