After the arrest of Joshua Wong (黃之鋒) and team member, Anges Chow (周庭) in pro-democracy party Demosistō (香港眾志) in Hong Kong in the morning on 30th August 2019, both were released on bail subsequently. On Facebook, Denise Ho (何韻詩) forwarded the news and left a message on the following day: “Do you think you can stop the protests by arresting all the citizens? Are you really naive? Do you want to see the worst outcome? Regardless of the method, the understanding is beyond our level. #fire HK chief, Carrie Lam (林鄭月娥)”

After that, Denise forwarded the message on Twitter and revealed many friends were worried about her safety as the protests kept increasing. She would be travelling to Australia shortly: “Have received numerous messages from friends worried about my safety. Am flying out soon to Australia and must admit these are legitimate concerns, given the escalating situation of arrests and pro-beijing attacks on activists. Will stay safe and keep you all posted. 🙏🏿#hk”

As the netizens remarked she escaped to Australia, Denise dismissed it quickly on Facebook: “Please be smarter and stop spreading nonsense including the media. I am working in Australia and the newspapers have been reporting it for the past two months. I definitely have to travel by plane and you do not expect me to swim to there. You are making me dumb as well.”
