Famous novelist Eileen Chang (張愛玲) writes a Chinese novel, Half a Lifelong Romance (半生緣) which is amended to Eighteen Spring (情深緣起) and produced as drama in 2017. It is currently airing and receiving poor reviews. Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) and Jiang Xin (蔣欣) play the female leads and are criticised for their performances. Lately, Carina rebutted and called herself as Gu Manlu (顧曼璐).
In Eileen’s novel, Gu Manlu is a woman in her twenties but Carina is 52 year old when filming the series at the time. She plaits her hair and sings on the stage, but her actual age is hard to convince the audiences. Thus, Carina accepted an interview from Chinese media and said: “I am aware of the criticisms but it does not bother me. Sorry, I do not consider my age is a factor when playing this role and feel I should play Gu Manlu, as there is a role suitable for me in Eileen’s novel.” She added she could play the roles well in the novels such as Rose Rouge et Rose Blanche (紅玫瑰與白玫瑰) and Love after Love (第一爐香).
