On 8th March, UA Cinema (UA戲院) announced the closure in Hong Kong because of COVID-19 and steep rental which delivered a shock to the entertainment industry and artistes.
On the same day, Simon Yam (任達華) expressed he was stunned about the closure of UA Cinema with Ron Ng (吳卓羲) and Patrick Tam (譚耀文) during the press conference. He said: “I feel unhappy and it happens too sudden. Hopefully the virus will end soon and an improvement in the economy. It is definitely a big blow to movie industry and I hope a big organisation will make an acquisition.”
As for Richie Jen (任賢齊), he remained positive and said: “Everyone is working hard to produce a good film and I believe many new cinema will be opening, after virus is over. I used to watch movies in UA Cinema and feel heartbroken to see the virus causes a heavy impact to food businesses as well.”
Ron agreed it was a pity but they had no choice: “I used to watch movies at UA Cinema in Sha Tin when little and it is my childhood memory. Hopefully all cinema will reopen soon.”
Jerry Lamb (林曉峰) confessed he went to many UA Cinema and wished the movie industry to think of a solution to maintain the survival: “Many people said the era has changed and I feel the cinema should have some changes such as opening a musical concert. People can watch it in the theatre since the actual venue might not fit in many audiences.”
Finally, Patrick recalled of patronising UA cinema frequently while dating in the past: “It is definitely a loss and hope there will be investors and take over the cinema.”
