A few days ago, former Ms Hong Kong Shirley Yeung (楊思琦) and Candy Law (羅霖) were invited to Master’s Talk (師父有請) show hosted by Bob Lam (林盛斌) and Mak Ling Ling (麥玲玲) as the guests. Ling Ling confessed she respected Shirley and Candy as it was challenging to take care of their children as single mothers.

When Bob pointed both were beauty queens, Candy disclosed she settled down after joining the industry for 5 years. As Ling Ling described the public felt her marriage with a wealthy man might be a failure, Candy said: “Many people love to bet if we are getting married or break up. In fact, marrying Roger Law (劉坤銘) did not cross my mind at all. I became an air stewardess at 18 year old and knew about enjoying delicious food and luxurious life. I did not really like him when knowing him initially as he was not my cup of tea. I was very frightened and kept a distance when he was wooing me but we saw each other frequently at the gatherings.”

Candy expressed it was very hard to support her 3 sons: “I have been tolerating for a long time before filing for a divorce. I plan to wait until my son is older but he is overboard so I decide to leave him. (Receive any alimony?) It was zero after the divorce. I need to support my kids while he is in-charge of education expenses. However, he engaged in a lawsuit with me after 6 months later and only wanted to pay partial of their education expenses. It is very exhausting and what should I do as a woman? Fortunately, my mother told me to go back and live together.”

Asking about her courage to take care of her children, Candy replied she intended to take her youngest son with her but her eldest and second elder sons took their luggages and looked for her. Hence, she had a bigger financial burden: “I did not think about making an on-screen comeback after the divorce due to my age. As an advertisement company approached me, I agreed and decided to set up my business at the same time.”

As for Shirley, her acting career was developing well but her pregnancy news was leaked out suddenly at the time: “Having baby is part of my plan. My former boyfriend, Mr Wu (吳帥) and I had problems and it was unlike the public’s assumptions. It was a simple issue and I chose to keep silence so as to avoid saying wrong words.”

Shirley explained she decided to support her baby by herself as Mr Wu had poor financial ability. After filing for a divorce, she continued to work for TVB but suffered from mild depression: “At the point, I felt completely clueless and there was a limit in playing roles after becoming a mother. I do not care about others’ opinions and survival is the most important.”

Other than paying for her child’s education expenses, Sisley needed to return to Hong Kong from Mainland China at midnight because of her daughter’s education problem. She was totally shocked when her daughter failed to complete an assignment on time and had to finish it quickly in order to take a rest: “My daughter knows I work very hard. Once, I had a fever and she was very worried about me. My heart melted immediately when she hugged me.”

Checking if she looked forward to a new romance after the divorce, Shirley said: “Nope in the first few years but my daughter told me she wanted a younger brother. (Did your daughter asks about her father?) Nope but she did say she wanted a daddy though. Anyway, I have a blissful family now and she keeps calling my current husband as her father.”

When asked about her husband’s identity remained a mystery, Shirley explained he worked in another industry and respected his decision about keeping a low profile: “I join the industry for 20 years and you should know I am a straightforward person. However, he wishes to keep his identity a secret and I respect his decision. (Not many people are aware of his identity?) Yes. The netizens pointed I have a virtual husband and play multiple roles. It is suffering to be a liar and impossible to think of many stuff. (Blame on your hubby?) Nope. Everyone has different thinking and we must think about his position. Overall, I have a happy family now.”

Candy added she had many suitors after her divorce not long ago and suffered from tremendous pressure when taking care of her children. She was worried about having a nervous breakdown and hoped to look for a partner now: “It is not easy to support a family. I do want a partner and my sons will ignore me when they set up their own families in the future. Anyway, I am mentally prepared for it and he does not need to be an eligible bachelor. Communication and a kind-hearted nature are the most important. Looks is secondary.”
